Digital Citizenship Week

The Porter Township School Corporation, along with other schools in Indiana, are celebrating Digital Citizenship Week!

As we all know, the face of learning and interaction has shifted with the use of technology.  Personally, I have seen the power of how a tool like technology can transform the face of teaching and learning right here in Porter Township.  The power that is available for curation, creation, and communication opens doors to endless possibilities.  But with great power comes great responsibility.  We each live a digital footprint, and the story your digital footprint tells has the potential to impact your acceptance into college and your ability to secure a job as folks are paying attention!  This impact doesn’t have to be negative, a digital footprint can be what sets you apart from others!  Just as you work to teach boundaries and safe use of technological tools at home, those are important lessons for us to teach at school, too.

We believe that students are going to live in a world in which they are going to interact with others online and we want them to be responsible, safe, and respectful as they do so.  In a 21st Century world, students are going to need to have skills to collaborate, think critically, solve problems, and interact in a digital environment and we believe it is important to prepare students to meet the demands of the world they will face when they leave PTSC.

While this may be Digital Citizenship week in Indiana, we work to incorporate these themes into what we do throughout the year.  We appreciate our families who work to partner with us on this for our students.  As I mentioned in the last update, there are amazing resources from Common Sense Media for families.  With the rapidly changing online world it is hard to keep up with all the new things our children encounter.  These folks make it their passion to supply parents with great resources.  Make sure to check them out!

PTSC Standouts:

We had our first safety lock down drill of the year last year–and our staff and students did a fantastic job!  This is just one of the many things we do to help create a safe learning environment and to help us be prepared.  Great job!

Things to Know/Do:

  • Now hiring a Computer Technician!  If you know someone who might be interested, send them to the link above!
  • Now hiring substitute teachers! Please contact Linda Dusek at the administration building if you are interested in substitute teaching and she will help you start the application process and discuss qualifications.
  • Do your friends and neighbors know how to find our weekly updates? Even if your neighbors don’t have kids in school tell them about our weekly updates so they can hear the great news of what happens at PTSC!
  • Every Wednesday is a 30-minute delayed start. If we have a 2-hour delay, students will arrive at school 2 hours after the regular start time for the building.
  • We are also looking for bus drivers to drive our extra-curricular runs. If you are interested, please apply online. It’s a great way to earn some money and attend extra-curricular events!
